New TAIC inquiry - freight train and hi-rail, South Otago

TAIC has opened an inquiry - RO-2020-102 - into a rail accident in which a freight train collided with a hi-Rail vehicle at about 3:05pm on 24 April 2020, on the main south-line between Milton and Henley, near Dunedin. 

The occupant of the hi-Rail vehicle exited the vehicle prior to impact and was not injured. 

The hi-Rail vehicle was substantially damaged.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission opens an inquiry when it believes the circumstances of an accident or incident have - or are likely to have - significant implications for transport safety, or when the inquiry may allow the Commission to make findings or recommendations to improve transport safety.
