Tranz Rail has adopted safety recommendation 081/99. Design standards exist. Design work is in accordance with the Mechanical Engineering Design manual and ISO 9001. A new design of handgrip is being fitted to this class of wagon at wagon overhauls and upgrades. The introduction of the wagon B check addresses the inspection and repair of safety critical components.
