The New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) is assisting an Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigation into a fatal Robinson R22 helicopter accident in the Northern Territory’s East Arnhem Land. The helicopter was participating in a herd mustering operation, went missing, and was later located approximately 6 km from the mustering camp. The pilot was deceased and the helicopter was destroyed.
ATSB asked (under ICAO Convention Annex 13) for New Zealand’s assistance, and TAIC has appointed an accredited representative and opened an inquiry under Section 8 (2)(e) of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission Act (To cooperate and coordinate with other accident investigation organisations overseas, including taking evidence on their behalf).
ATSB’s investigation is continuing and will conclude with a final report by ATSB.
